Durban On Our Own

Day 89/Durban, South Africa

This blog posting is all text, no photos. I'm suddenly having trouble sending the blog. Maybe it is something about the photos? So I'm trying an all-text one.

If you want to see where we went in Durban, try Googling uShaka Marine World. I hope that will lead you to some good pictures and information.
We decided to skip the organized tours in Durban. The Amsterdam was offering free shuttle service from our dock to a "shopping mall", so we hopped on to a big, comfortable bus and waited to see where it would take us. We were a little surprised to be dropped off at Marine World, but it was a beautiful day and we were near the beach. We decided to just go with the flow.
We followed the crowds through an elaborate entrance that reminded us of Disneyland. This led us to a nice indoor-outdoor mall that ended at the beach. The entrance to Marine World was there too, but we decided to stay outdoors and stroll along the wide walkway next to the beach.
Eventually we made our way back to the shuttle stop. The local PeopleMover bus stops there, too. We boarded that, and for about 50 cents each we had a nice ride through the city and back to our starting point. A bonus: we had some interesting conversations with local residents during the ride.
Finally, back to the ship for a South African barbecue, followed by a showing of Out Of Africa.
